Just a Thought

Problems with teens often are signs of troubles within families as a whole. One part of raising child that is particularly difficult is meeting the needs of each child and defining when enough is enough. Every child is different, so their needs will be different. With one child you may need to spend more time with, with another child you may need to spend time talking, and with some you may need to give more physical expressions of love. An important aspect of being a parent is to take the time to figure out how to help each child individually.

One suggestion that we have for strengthening families is to eat one meal together as a family, this can make a huge difference in family relations. As parents of the household you should designate one meal that everyone needs to set aside to be together as a family. Remove all distractions during that time such as television, computers, and cell phones. It should be a time for everyone to gather together and talk. Communications skills are vital, make sure that the conversations are constructive. This is not a time for a parental “soap box preaching”. Listen to what your children say, and ask simple questions based upon what they are talking about. If you want a health relationship with your kids you need to make sure that you help in creating that environment.
