It all depends on what you mean by “classical.” I am assuming you mean literature prior to the 20th century. Poets in the British and American canons that many consider to be essential would include: Whitman, Poe, Dickinson, Thoreau, Longfellow, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Kipling, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Yeats, Shakespeare, Rosetti, Tennyson. Most of these are from the Romantic period which is a favorite for many students.
